5 Open Mic Mistakes

The common mistakes and how to avoid them.

The song still needs your full attention

If a distraction makes you lose your place at home, nerves may do the same on stage. Play standing up, front to back, before adding a new song.

The screen becomes the audience

Keep lyrics nearby as a safety net. Lift your eyes for the chorus and sing a line to someone in the room.

The rehearsal is too comfortable

Stand at the mic height you will use. Record a mock introduction, a count-in and the full song with ordinary room noise.

Try this tonight

Start with the guitar in its case. Set up, introduce yourself and play your first song. Notice what felt different from a seated practice.
